What is Wordhorse?
Wordhorse is a daily five-letter word ladder with one clear destination: HORSE. You begin with a new starting word each day and build a route home, one valid word at a time. Each new rung must change exactly one letter from the word directly above it. There is no scrambled anagram trick and no hidden definition to guess. The challenge is to see a chain of small, meaningful transformations that gradually carries your word to its final stable.
For example, a move from HOUSE to HORSE works because only the fourth letter changes. A move that changes two letters does not work, even if both words are real. Every rung must be a five-letter word accepted by the game. This makes Wordhorse part spelling puzzle, part route-finding puzzle, and part vocabulary game. The best move is not always the first word that looks closer to the finish.
How to play the daily word ladder
The starting word is already placed on the first row. Type a five-letter word, then press Enter. If it is a valid one-letter change, it becomes the next rung. Keep going until you enter HORSE. The board begins compactly, then scrolls as your route grows, so you can focus on the ladder instead of worrying about a fixed number of guesses. Backspace removes a letter before you submit; you can also use the on-screen keyboard on touch devices.
Green tiles are direction markers, not ordinary Wordle feedback. A green tile means that the letter is already in the same final position it has in HORSE. A grey tile means that position still needs to change. The colors do not reveal the answer to the next rung, and they do not tell you whether a letter appears elsewhere in the target. Use them as gentle signs that part of your route is homeward-bound.
Par, scoring, and daily play
Each Wordhorse puzzle has a Par: the fewest moves in the prepared route from that day’s starting word to HORSE. Reaching the finish is the goal; finishing at Par is the extra challenge. You are free to take a different valid route, and you may need an extra rung while exploring. After you finish, your result is saved for the day, your streak is updated, and you can copy a spoiler-safe grid to share. The shared grid shows your progress through color blocks without publishing the words you used.
A new route arrives at midnight UTC. The score button shows your solved count, current streak, best streak, and the time left until the next puzzle. Wordhorse saves the board in your browser too. If you refresh halfway through a ladder, today’s work should still be waiting for you. Once a daily route is complete, it stays complete on that browser until the next day begins.
Tips for finding a route to HORSE
Start by looking for a useful one-letter neighbor rather than trying to leap toward the final word all at once. Common word families can give you several choices: a changed vowel may open a new route, while a changed first letter can turn a dead end into a useful cluster. If a move makes one tile green, that is often helpful, but it is not compulsory to keep it green immediately. Sometimes a short detour creates a much cleaner way back.
Try to keep your guesses familiar and say them aloud if you are stuck. Word ladders reward noticing patterns such as -OUSE, -ORSE, or a shared ending, but every daily route is designed to be solved by word thinking rather than random typing. There is no penalty for taking time, and there is no need to reveal the solution. Build a route you can explain, get the word home, and return tomorrow for the next ride.
